Automakers have struggled throughout automotive history to create economy cars that aren’t ‘economical’ with the features they offer. Before BYD took off like SpaceX Starship, China had a rap for churning out cheap knockoffs with next to zero ROI. Affordable premium isn’t new in the industry, as proven by models like the Toyota Corolla, Subaru Impreza, Volkswagen Golf, and Honda Civic. However, many cars out there present a semblance of affordability but aren’t worth the money you spent or thought you saved. You might lose more than you saved to the TCO (True Cost of Ownership) or find yourself with a model with a poor resale value, absent comfort creatures, or wallet-draining fuel economy. While not all cheap cars are poor investments, the 13 on this list are generally considered not worth the savings.
